STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE OF HOSUR

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) conducted feasibility studies on multiple sites, leading to the shortlisting of two potential locations: one near the existing TAAL airstrip and another near Thogarai Agraharam in Shoolagiri. A significant regulatory hurdle for the Hosur International Airport project is the concession agreement between the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation and Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL), which operates KIA. This agreement, signed in 2004, prohibits the development of any new airport within a 150-kilometer radius of KIA for 25 years from its opening in May 2008. Consequently, this restriction remains in effect until May 2033.

To proceed with the Hosur airport project, the Tamil Nadu government is engaging in discussions with BIAL and central authorities to seek necessary approvals or exemptions. The state government is also coordinating with stakeholders to address any legal and operational challenges associated with this restriction.
